Cycle of Violence

Some victims report the relationship with their partner follows a cycle, alternating violence with “bliss,” with a period of tension in between.

This is not reported in every case of domestic violence; however, the following is what it may look like:
Tension Building Stage: Victims describe this period as “walking on eggshells”. Tension is very high in the home and emotional abuse is very common during this phase.

Violent Incident: This is when physical abuse or sexual assault occurs.

The “Honeymoon”: During this phase, the abuser asks for forgiveness and promises never to act in such a manner again. In many cases, the batterer will buy the victim gifts and promise to seek help for their behavior.

The level of violence usually escalates over time, getting progressively more severe.

The honeymoon phase gets shorter and may eventually disappear entirely.

The cycle of abuse normally repeats itself while the good times in between grow shorter and shorter.
